To know Christ and to make Him known.

Lenten Season at St. John's

Lent is meant to be a 40 Day Journey to grow closer to God, a season of preparation for Easter and a time of fasting, penitence, almsgiving, prayer, and study.  In the early church sinners who had been publicly excommunicated from the church began a 40 day period of pentitential discipline at the beginning of Lent so they could be readmitted to Communion on Easter Day.  This custom lies at the root of our Lenten observance today.  Lent's climax is in the baptismal liturgy and renewal of baptismal vows at Easter.

Lenten activities at St. John's include:

*The Power of a Whisper by Pastor Bill Hybels is our Lenten Study Program.   Pastor Hybels is the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill.  This four part series is a powerful yet practical journey into how to discern the "voice" of God, how to invite His input into your daily life, and how to allow heaven-sent input (whispers) to direct your life toward making a difference in this world.

Please join us for a simple dinner of soup, salad, and bread each Wednesdays March 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th with light dinner beginning at .  We have some people to help with the kids - so bring them!!  Please also consider bringing a friend.

*Stations of the Cross - Friday's during Lent at 5:30 PM beginning February 24th

Stations of the Cross, or The Way of the Cross, is a series of fourteen images depicting incidents in the narrative of Christ's passion, from Pilate's house to His entombment, arranged around the walls of the church.  Each station is visited in turn with a pause for reading, a versicle and response, a collect, and time for meditation.

*Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper - Tuesday, February 21st at 5:30 PM

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is an Episcopal tradition in many parishes.  The name "Shrove" is from an archaic English word meaning "to confess one's sins".  The day is named for acts of penitence and absolution traditionally performed on this day.

Please join us for fellowship, pancakes, sausage, and eggs.
